Parenting & Educational Programs

The MIC Parent Programs are conducted in various schools throughout The School District of Philadelphia.  The purpose of these programs is to have better informed, more engaged parents who have the knowledge and skills to help their children develop into productive citizens.  These programs work in conjunction with the programs that the students participate in their school.  This gives students and parents an opportunity to work on issues, concerns as a team, and provides an opportunity to strengthen the family unit.

In The School District of Philadelphia, “Parents are Our Partners” is not a slogan; it is one of the District’s five Core Beliefs. During 2009-2010 parents in great numbers confirmed Superintendent Arlene Ackerman’s conviction that, given the opportunity to be involved in a meaningful way, parents will step forward and be actively engaged in their children’s education. The following are overviews of some of the District’s key parent engagement initiatives.

Parent University  The School District of Philadelphia’s Parent University offers free classes and workshops to accelerate student and parent learning outcomes and strengthen parenting skills and knowledge. Classes are held at the School District Education Center and at other locations throughout the city. The only requirement to enroll is that the individual is a parent of a child currently enrolled in a District school. More info>>>

Superintendent’s Parent Roundtables In 2009-2010 Superintendent Ackerman met six times with parents in dialogues called roundtables. These evening sessions gave parents an opportunity to meet and speak with the Superintendent, ask questions, air ideas and concerns and get updates on key initiatives.   More info>>>

Parent and Community Ombudsmen  In 2009-2010, there were 170 parent and community ombudsmen; the majority were assigned to schools, and one ombudsman was assigned to each of the District’s regional offices. The ombudsmen build school, family and community connections, respond to questions from parents and other stakeholders and assist in resolving concerns. Contact: Your child’s school. More info>>>
